Bill Haney sets the record straight on Gary Russell Jr!
Sadly, within the sport of boxing, all too often some of the more gifted athletes frequently find themselves without a viable dance partner. This has been a chronic phenomenon for WBC world lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (24-0, 15 KO’s) as well as WBC world featherweight champion “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr (31-1, 18 KO’s).
So when Russell stated that he would accept a fight with The Dream, it appeared that we could have one wonderful impending dust-up on our hands. Regrettably, nothing of substance materialized from that hopeful exchange. Now however, the tension between Team Russell and Team Haney is the highest that it’s ever been!
FAR-FETCHED FINANCING
According to The Dream’s father and chief second Bill Haney, there was direct communication between himself and Russell Jr. However, as the elder Haney told to Barbershop Conversations, the major snag in production arose over the amount of money Russell was looking to get paid for the scrap.
“Like I’m going to say with Gary Russell, I gave him 48 hours right, to come up with that shit. He said he going to Al [Haymon]. You know 24 hours is already up. So I mean he went on air and he said, from the number that he was talking about, he said he was going to go talk to Al; one of the biggest guys in the game, arguably…Devin wants to really get in the ring and I really want to make it happen for him, but the number that he [Russell] asked about was so unrealistic it was almost just like Adrien Broner asking for the 10 million that he asked for.”
KEEP IT REAL!
Neither Haney is new to game. So if a fight was not in the cards, they were not going to lose a wink of sleep over it. However, when they heard that Russell was indicating that Team Haney was ducking and hiding, this was something that neither Bill nor Devin could stomach silently.
“So I did my due diligence in terms of that, but outside of that, what I came on to say was: ‘G, come one man, we tried our best to make the shit happen, you know what I am saying? But if it couldn’t happen, for you to say that we was ducking out on you, we the ones that called you!’ You know that, me and you done talked several times about him. He know he had my number!
So for him to go on the air and include that, include Devin with them other chumps, like the guys that he put his arm around daddy and all that other shit. We don’t get down like that! Nigga ain’t going to put his arm around me or do none of that.
They into slapping niggas, so that would have definitely been a reason to get slapped if you put your arm around me. I don’t care how slick you talking. Me and him always had a good understanding, but at some point in time you draw the line.”
ALPO TIME!
Yet, if any one somehow had any lingering confusion on how Team Haney felt about the matter, Bill took the time to clear any of that up.
“Gary Russell been looking like food to us for a long time dog, you know what I am saying? You got to keep it 100. What I am saying is we’ve already been talking, I’m the one that called him…that man didn’t call me, Gary Russell ain’t got my number man, he ain’t connected to the streets like that, dog!”
It will be fun to see how the prideful Mr. Gary Russell responds to the stern and direct message that Bill Haney has put out for public consumption.
