Bill Haney Stevenson is Reacting Out of Jealousy Towards Devin

It’s no secret that undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (30-0, 15 KO’s) and two-division champion “Fearless” Shakur Stevenson (20-0, 10 KO’s) used to be good friends. The two talented boxers made their bones alongside one another during the amateurs and remained in good standing well into their professional careers. Now, however, there is a glaring rift in their bond and Bill Haney, father and trainer of The Dream, feels he has his finger on the pulse of why that is.

FEARLESS GREEN-EYED MONSTER

Over the past few months, the two have exchanged increasingly testy and combative social media posts. In the last few days however, this back-and-forth became far more aggressive and personal. In one of those posts, Fearless took direct aim at Bill Haney. While still wounded, the elder Haney speculated with ThaBoxingVoice that this series of attacks is based upon a form of misplaced anger at best, or jealousy at worst.

“He’s been at Top Rank and I think he would be considered a Franchise Player over there. So if he wanted to fight with George Kambosos or he wanted the fight with [Vasily] Lomachenko, those fights were already over there.

And for a Hall of Fame promoter and outfit like Bob Arum, I would be completely disturbed and also I would be completely upset in the fact that you had this guy in Devin come over here from God knows where and get all the opportunities – like the opportunity at undisputed, the opportunity at Lomachenko, when it was only five pounds that separated those opportunities for you, you know what I mean?

Those guys, that was already lined up, Lomachenko was already lined up and I always said is that’s Shakur’s food, if he want it. I think he’s a little bit upset after seeing Devin eat and then he’s like, ‘damn, that should have been me,’ respectfully.”

BUSINESS OVER BROTHERHOOD??

Given the sheer length of time that these two fighters have remained friendly with one another, it would be a shame if business soured their union. At this point in the game however, it looks as if this ongoing beef will only grow more thorny and antagonistic. On the bright side though, no matter what happens with this situation in the future, 3Kings Boxing will be here to keep you on top of all the latest wisecracks and meaningful developments.
