Bivol May Be Cornered into Rematch With Undisputed Champ Canelo
WBA Super light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (21-0, 11KO) wants to fight for Artur Beterbiev for undisputed. However, he may have to settle for the rematch with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-2-2, 39KO).
On November 5, Bivol, after soundly defeating Gilberto Ramirez, proved once again he is an elite-level fighter. Moreover, he is considered the favorite to win the undisputed crown against unified champion Beterbiev.
THE WBC’S DECISION MAY PREVENT UNDISPUTED FROM HAPPENING
Yet, fans will have to pump the brakes on any thoughts of seeing the undisputed showdown. News has dropped that WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has ordered the winner between Beterbiev and WBO mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde must face Callum Smith next.
This decision makes it more difficult to get an undisputed battle going in 2023. However, Bivol may have to face Alvarez in a rematch. It is no surprise that the WBA champion has shown very little interest in an Alvarez rematch. In an interview with IFL TV, he expressed that the rematch is a secondary priority.
BIVOL MAY HAVE TO FIGHT THE REMATCH AFTER ALL
Bivol may have no choice but to go forward with the rematch if, indeed, the undisputed champion decides to push for it. The next question is whether it will be for the undisputed super middleweight crown.
If the WBA champion is hell-bent on fighting for undisputed, then an opportunity may arise to do so for Canelo’s belts. During the post-fight interview of the Ramirez victory, Bivol did not rule out the option of going to 168.
