Jose Zepeda Shows Prospect Josue Vargas There Are Levels to the Game

The classic rivalry between Mexico vs Puerto Rico is alive and growing as two-divisional title contender Jose “Chon” Zepeda (34-2, 26ko) did battle with rising prospect Josue “The Prodigy” Vargas (19-1, 9ko).

Vargas is a Puerto Rican fighter that has come a long way since suffering his first blemish on his record back in 2016 via disqualification. He has not lost a fight since and is taking a huge step-up fight with Zepeda.

Zepeda holds the honor of being part of the 3kingsboxing 2020 Fight of the Year award, with his meme-style knockout of former IBF junior welterweight champion Ivan Baranchyk. He is coming off of a lackluster performance against veteran Henry Lundy on May 22. However, he is undoubtedly pumped for this rivalry.

During the weigh-in, things got intense between both camps. A small altercation broke when the fighters were jockeying for position to show their respective flags. Zepeda’s brother/trainer Renee Zepeda got suspended for pushing Vargas. For this, Zepeda vowed to make Vargas and his team pay by going for the early knockout!

He got what he was looking for!

CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR

Going into the fight, Vargas was extremely confident and felt they had an advantage with Zepeda’s trainer suspended from the corner. Furthermore, he believed to have gotten into the head of his more experienced opponent.

There is a famous phrase in boxing: “There are levels to this.” If you turned to answer the phone or went to open the door for a visitor, you are undoubtedly mad watching the replay.

When the bell sounded to start the match, the pro-Puerto Rican New York crowd was instantly hushed as Zepeda threw a jab to blind the younger fighter before landing a crushing left hand directly on the chin.

Vargas fell to the canvas in a lifeless state. Amazingly he managed to get up only to get pummeled in the corner before the ref stopped the fight. Zepeda would make good on his promise to get the kid out of there immediately!

When asked what he wanted to do next, the WBC #2 ranked contender immediately called for the undisputed champion Josh Taylor.
