Blair Cobbs Seeking to Sub for Vergil Ortiz Against Eimantas Stanionis
Welterweight contender Blair “The Flair” Cobbs (16-1-1, 10KO) wants to take fellow stablemate Vergil Ortiz Jr’s (19-0, 19KO) place in challenging WBA Regular champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9KO).
On March 29, the boxing community received a kick in the gut when the fight between Stanionis and Ortiz Jr got postponed for a second time. Originally, they were set to fight on March 18, but the WBA Regular champion needed an emergency appendectomy, pushing the fight back until April 29.
This time, Ortiz pulled out due to a recurring condition called rhabdomyolysis, which he was treated for back in 2022. There has been no rescheduled date revealed, leaving the fight in limbo.
BLAIR COBBS WANTS PBC TO GIVE HIM A CALL
Golden Boy Promotions won the right to host the fight after winning the purse bid on November 2022. With Ortiz out, stablemate Cobbs seems to be ready to step in. He took to social media with a message for all parties involved.
“PBC, hit me up ASAP. Hey, Vergil’s out. PBC, Showtime, everybody, DAZN, everybody should be hitting me up right now. The most exciting man in boxing is ready! Let’s go, baby, let’s get it!”
Cobbs was stopped by Alexis Rocha in 2022. He bounced back five months later with a big win over former WBO junior welterweight champion Maurice Hooker. Moreover, his name came up as an opponent for Adrien Broner when Golden Boy executive Bernard Hopkins was looking to sign the multi-divisional champion.
The only hiccup in making the fight is Ortiz was the mandatory challenger. The Flair is ranked #6 by the WBO and none of the other major sanctioning bodies. So, the WBA may not approve of the fight getting made. Cobbs has been waiting for a moment like this. It will be interesting to see what happens in the upcoming weeks.
