Crawford vs Spence Set a Bar Boxing Has Not Touched Since
The sport of boxing hasn’t been worth talking about since 2023. That year was the sport’s last mega-fight as Terence Crawford defeated Errol Spence for the undisputed welterweight crown.
At the end of 2023, boxing fans were excited as things looked as if the sport was ready to take off. Several quality fights grabbed the attention of the boxing community that year, such as Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia. In addition, Canelo Alvarez fought Jermall Charlo in an undisputed vs undisputed showdown.
Devin Haney made the pound-for-pound list of several pundits after defeating Vasyl Lomachenko and Regis Prograis. Lastly, Oleksandr Usyk had a memorable fight against Daniel Dubois. After that year it seemed the air was let out of the balloon, as the sport has struggled to regain the magic.
Things are so bad that boxing fans don’t even realize fights are happening until the week of the fight. In addition, fighters are being heavily overpaid, which has resulted in them not wanting to take risky fights. It is safe to say, if things continue this way, the sport will never be the same.
