Adrien Broner vs Omar Figueroa Welterweight Bout Set for July 23
Adrien “The Problem” Broner (34-4-1, 24KOs) is back! The four-division champion will return to the ring on July 23 in Chicago against former WBC 135-pound champion Omar Figueroa (28-2-1, 19KOs). The fight will take place on PBC on Fox and be fought at welterweight.
The Cincinnati native broke the news on social media.
For Broner, this will be his first fight since his February 20, 2021 fight against Alexis Santiago. He defeated Santiago by an unimpressive unanimous decision. As for Figueroa, he got stopped in six rounds against Abel Ramos last May.
Both of these fighters have had solid careers. Broner, once thought to be a future superstar in the sport, hasn’t quite lived up to the lofty expectations placed on him by himself and others. He ha’s been a champion and a great self-promoter. However, since leaving the lightweight division in 2013, things have been a struggle. Even so, his willingness to fight anyone has never been questioned.
In the case of Figueroa, the hard-hitting former champion with limited amateur experience seemingly ran into discipline issues. Just after two defenses of his WBC 135-pound title, his troubles making weight began. For his May 2015 fight with Ricky Burns, Figueroa weighed 151 pounds; eleven pounds over the junior welterweight limit. He would also miss weight for his fight with Antonio DeMarco.
Simply put, this is a do or die fight for both men. A loss would surely push either even further down the totem pole for another world title opportunity.
