Bruce Carrington Sets his Sights on Taking Over at Featherweight
Featherweight Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (11-0, 7 KOs) embodies confidence. He’s not shy about expressing his opinion of what he envisions for himself. The 26-year-old from Brooklyn, New York feels he’s on a path to take over the sport and become a superstar.
Carrington is the talk of boxing enthusiasts following a fourth-round knockout over Bernard Angelo Torres on the undercard of O’Shaquie Foster versus Abraham Torres on February 16 at Madison Square Garden. Afterward, Shu Shu spoke with various members of the boxing press. While the New Yorker didn’t call out specific names, he’s putting the boxing world on notice.
“I just want to keep stepping up and doing my thing. Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington is here to take over the whole featherweight division, the whole boxing world. Day by day, we’re going to do that.”
OVERFLOWING WITH TALENT
Featured in 3kingsboxing.com’s Prospect Watch series, Carrington is a fighter with all the physical tools. The 5’8” pugilist has a big frame for a 126-pounder and seemingly has all the offensive tools in the shed.
Carrington has a piston-like jab, throws fluid combinations to the head and body, and can bang with either hand. But he’s not just a fighter who relies on firepower. He’s defensively responsible as well. His size and skillset are reminiscent of a featherweight version of Hall of Famer Thomas Hearns.
As a bonus, Shu Shu has shown plenty of personality during interviews. It all equals someone who can do tremendous things moving forward and win world titles in multiple weight classes.
Top Rank currently guides his career. The promotional giant knows how to build fighters and make them into a mainstream attraction. They will do everything to raise his profile outside the ring. Word on the street is that they’re looking to put their charge in the ring against a world-ranked featherweight by the end of this year.
The reality is that he’s still a baby in this sport. But the knockout over Torres and Carrngton’s December 2023 second-round stoppage over former world title challenger Jason Sanchez are signs that Shu Shu is not your average up-and-comer. If he keeps his head on straight and keeps progressing, the Brooklynite has the look of a fighter with a limitless future.
