David Benavidez Should Target Joshua Buatsi For His Interim Title
Two-time WBC super middleweight champion David “The Monster” Benavidez (29-0, 24KO) still wants to fight undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39KO). However, if he can’t get that fight, The Monster should target top-rated light heavyweight contender Joshua Buatsi (18-0, 13KO).
Having scored a victory over one-time WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, The Monster continues to push for a fight with Canelo. During the post-fight press conference, he expressed interest in pushing for the WBC mandatory challenge.
“I definitely want to invoke my mandatory right. It’s something I worked for the past three years.”
A GOOD BACKUP PLAN
It is no secret that Benavidez holds the WBC Interim title in the super middleweight division and has been chasing Canelo. Well, news surrounding the undisputed champion possibly fighting William Scull will have a domino effect.
Now it’s been reported that Team Scull may have agreed to step aside. However, Benavidez could still be left out in the cold, as Alvarez shows no signs of wanting the fight. So, if he can’t get Alvarez, perhaps The Monster should look in the direction of Buatsi.
The undefeated British resident has been ordered to fight Willy Hutchinson for the WBO interim title. Benavidez should petition the organization to see if he can slide in and fight Buatsi. It’s a win-win situation that would give the victor a firm grip on fighting for the undisputed title.
Buatsi has enjoyed plenty of success on the domestic level. A win against someone the caliber of Benavidez’s stature would prove that he is ready for the championship level.
For Benavidez, he can use this fight to shake off the doubters who believe he isn’t ready to face the champions of the division. In addition, he would be facing another top-rated contender and staying busy until a title fight presents itself.
