Late Substitute Giovanni Cabrera Makes Easy Work of Giron
At the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma Giovanni Cabrera (19-0, 7 KOs) squared off against Juan Rene Tellez Giron (16-2, 10 KOs) in an eight-round junior welterweight contest. It was Cabrera’s first outing since October of 2019 as he’s dealt with promotional and managerial problems.
Having recently signed with a multi-fight deal with Top Rank, the resident of Chicago hoped to recapture the mojo against Giron who was beset with weight issues. Originally scheduled to face Luis Melendez, Melendez decided to pull out after Giron came in five pounds over the contracted 132-pound weight limit. Already scheduled to appear on the card, Cabrera stepped up to the plate and agreed to take the fight on short notice.
SIZE MATTERED
A southpaw, Cabrera started matters behind the jab. The difference in size was obvious, as looked a full division bigger than Giron. To compound matters, Cabrera is just, plain, awkward. He throws punches from odd angles and at an odd tempo. Giron was a willing warrior but had no clue how to attack his slippery opponent.
MORE OF THE SAME
The tone set by Cabrera early continued all night long. When Giron tried to get inside, he would get countered with left uppercuts to the head and body. At center-ring, Cabrera used his length and speed to pot-shot. Giron’s only level of success came towards the end of round six when he landed with looping left hooks and right hands. But Cabrera was able to steady the ship over the last two rounds.
This was easy to score as the judges scored the fight for Cabrera by unanimous decision (77-75, 78-74 x2). Given his size and unique style, and being trained by famed Freddie Roach, it will be interesting what Top Rank has in store for him moving forward.
