Caleb Plants Earns a TKO Victory Against Trevor McCumby
After an extremely exciting fight, one-time super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (23-2, 13 KO’s) scalped tough challenger “Tenacious” Trevor McCumby (28-1, 21 KO’s) by ninth round TKO.
The first several rounds of the fight were full of hard punches and a great deal of showboating. At the end of second, it was possible that McCumby was shorted a knock down after clipping Sweethands hard in the corner. The two were tangled up when Plant went down which led referee Allen Huggins to rule it a slip. But once back on his feet, Plant did look notably wobbly.
To his credit, Plant came back well in the third period only for McCumby to be awarded an official knockdown in the fifth. During the sixth and seventh rounds, Sweethands swung the duel into his favor in a major way by keeping McCumby’s back plastered to the ropes and hammering his body like a career drunk at happy hour. To his credit, Tenacious was tough and never stopped trying to win. But as he slowed, he didn’t have the tricks or experience to turn the tide back his way.
Then in the closing moment of the ninth, with McCumby trapped against the ropes again, Plant unloaded an extended, accurate flurry full of piercing left body hooks and head-snapping shots that forced Allen Huggins to jump in and halt the action. With the win, Plant became the interim WBA super middleweight champion.
