Can Jose Benavidez Jr. Upset Danny Garcia?
On July 30, Jose Benavidez Jr. (27-1-1, 18KOs) has another chance to secure a career-signature victory when he takes on two-division world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (36-3, 21KOs). A talented fighter, Benavidez has been hampered by injuries and long layoffs. This has affected his ability to showcase just how good he can really be.
Benavidez Jr is a former world title challenger. He was stopped in his bid to become WBO 147-pound champion by Terence Crawford back in 2018. He’s eager to pick up the most significant victory of his career over Garcia. Swift should be the favorite heading in. This still factors in that he heads into this matchup coming off a one-sided loss to unified 147-pound champion Errol Spence Jr. over seventeen months ago.
SWIFT SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO BENAVIDEZ!
Garcia himself is coming off an extended layoff coupled with a loss. Furthermore, he now is debuting in an even bigger weight class against a naturally bigger guy, You’d have to give Benavidez more than a puncher’s chance at springing the upset. If Benavidez Jr. is healthy, he’s the type of fighter that can trouble Garcia. In his fight with Crawford, even with one good leg, he was able to trouble the multi-weight world champion before getting stopped in the twelfth and final round.
Regardless of the outcome, this should be a pretty good fight. However, a win for Benavidez will surely open the door for even bigger fights and possibly another world title opportunity down the road.
