Canelo Alvarez vs with Caleb Plant?! What else does the face of boxing have up his sleeve?

Boxings’ biggest earner Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36ko), shocked the boxing world with news of a split from Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN. Although, this was only a matter of time! Especially when Alvarez filed a lawsuit against both parties back in September.

Well, hold on cause things are about to very interesting.

The four-divisional champion is about to send an even bigger shockwave throughout the sport as it now appears he will be fighting IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant (20-0, 12ko).

Furthermore, the contracted date is December 19, which would mean Canelo will be keeping his word of fighting this year.

CANELO WORKING WITH HAYMON

Although a venue nor promotional network to hos the fight has been announced, it is safe to speculate that team Canelo has been dealing with the Premier Boxing Champions head honcho Al Haymon.

In fact a case can be made that perhaps given the circumstances, Haymon could have played a pivotal role in helping the Mexican star out of the lengthy contract with DAZN. Remember, it was the PBC boss after all that helped promoter Richard Shaffer in the same way from the same promotional company!

CAN PLANT PULL OFF A VICTORY

Make no mistake this is a huge opportunity for Sweet hands. The question he will have to contend with answering is “can he pull off a victory?”

The IBF super middleweight champion earlier in the year was heavily criticized for turning down a fight with the Mexican superstar. Plant felt team Canelo was trying to take advantage by giving him a short training camp, similar to what he did to Sergey Kovalev prior to their November 2019 bout. However, the IBF champion did make it clear that a September showdown was on the table.

Plant is a very good boxer but to beat the four-divisional champion, he will need something extra. This is an opponent like none the IBF champ has faced before. Alvarez is an elite fighter in his prime and at the top of his game. Even for a seasoned fighter like Sweet hands, this is a huge step up in class.

It is not just Canelo in the ring that the IBF champion must beat. It’s the influence on the sport that Plant will also have to contend against. Once he enters the building, the champion will be in hostile territory with fans and judges.

Furthermore even without the Golden Boy machine in his corner, Canelo is still the face of the sport. The pressure will be on Plant and if he is up for the challenge, it undoubtedly can be one hell of a fight!
