Alvarez withdraws from May 5th rematch
Well it’s official! Canelo Alvarez has officially pulled out of his scheduled rematch with Gennady Golovkin at a press conference today at the Golden Boy offices in Los Angeles.
“We’re going to have to cancel the May 5 rematch,” Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez at the beginning of a press conference at the company’s offices in downtown Los Angeles. “As you all know there is a hearing on April 18 and it’s extremely unlikely this will get resolved by then properly and we need enough time to promote this fight.”
This should come as no surprise, with Alvarez failing two drug tests for the banned substance Clenbuterol, and mounting pressure for the NSAC to take the proper action against Canelo Alvarez for his actions.
Gennady Golovkin and his team were already making plans to move forward without Canelo because they expected the NSAC to rule in favor of canceling the fight. There is a meeting scheduled for this Thursday in which Team Golovkin has asked the NSAC for a change of venue as well as lead promotional responsibilities.
While Gennady Golovkin moves on to face a opponent TBA on May 5th, Canelo Alvarez will move onto his hearing with the NSAC on April 18th and try to explain how the Clenbuterol got into his system.
Gomez said during today’s invite only press conference that they will try to schedule a Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch in either August or September.
