Did Golden Boy’s contract extension with Ryan Garcia have ulterior motives?
As most boxing fans know, the contract extension of lightweight Ryan Garcia was a big day for Golden Boy Promotions.
Simultaneously, a formal announcement came out for the much-rumored contest between current WBA “Super” World Middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and WBO Light Heavyweight titlist Sergey Kovalev.
As reported, Garcia previously expressed frustration with Golden Boy in a series of tweets. So, with the signing of Garcia, things on the surface seem to be copacetic. However, is the new deal with the young prospect part of a larger, ulterior motive for Golden Boy?
Following the Golden Boy press event, 3KingsBoxing learned that Canelo had someone interesting comments about one Oscar De La Hoya. He would answer questions regarding his relationship with his promoter, as “working.” In his words specifically, “trabajo.”
Canelo would also respond to questions on his promoter’s claims of a third bout with Golovkin.
“Oscar says a lot of things.”
Now, how is this connected to Garcia? Well, for one, Canelo has been a mentor for the prospect. Furthermore, Garcia shares a trainer with Alvarez in Eddie Reynoso.
Canelo’s comments about De La Hoya suggest that behind the scenes, things may not all be kosher.
Knowing Garcia’s relationship with Canelo, and given the middleweight champion’s comments about De La Hoya, could the signing of Garcia have just as much to do with Golden Boy Promotions trying melt the ice with their biggest star?
The relationship between Alvarez and Golden Boy is definitely something to keep an eye on moving forward.
