The IBF Could Strip Canelo Alvarez If He Faces Edgar Berlanga
Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39KO) may soon be headed for a showdown with WBA mandatory contender “The Chosen One” Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17KO), according to ESPN. However, this option may cost him the undisputed crown.
According to ESPN, Canelo is on the verge of fighting The Chosen One in September, but he may get stripped of the IBF title. It shouldn’t surprise boxing fans, considering after beating Jaime Munguia, it was apparent that Berlanga likely would be next. The undefeated Puerto Rican let the cat out of the bag with a viral post on social media.
THIS FIGHT MAY COME AT A COST
The IBF ordered a purse bid for Canelo to face number one contender William Scull. Fans later learned of a rumored agreement that may have seen the Cuban to step aside. If this is not the case and there is no step-aside in place, then the organization can come knocking on Canelo’s door looking for their property. This would mark the second time the IBF has relieved him of the title. Yet, the biggest takeaway from all this will be the undisputed champion continuously ducking David Benavidez.
Yes, fighting Berlanga has some financial benefits as it is the classic Mexican versus Puerto Rican rivalry. Providing the fight gets made, it undoubtedly will be Pay-Per-View, available for purchase on DAZN and Amazon Prime.
But, if we are being honest, no one considers The Chosen One a threat to dethrone Canelo. That distinction has belonged to Benavidez for quite some time.
