Berlanga May Get The Fight With Canelo Alvarez In September

Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39KO) will likely choose to fight WBA mandatory Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-0, 17KO) instead of two-time WBC champion David “The Monster” Benavidez (28-0, 24KO) next.

Canelo remains the division’s kingpin after successfully defending the title against Jaime Munguia on May 4. In a spirited contest featuring two Mexican fighters, Alvarez’s experience was the ultimate factor in the victory.

With this fight in the books, fans hope a fight against Benavidez happens next. Well, Berlanga has something to say about it. Immediately following the fight he posted a tweet hinting at a fight with Canelo in September.

HE CAN DO WHAT HE WANTS

During the post-fight interview, Canelo was candid about being able to do whatever he wanted.

“Right now I can ask for whatever I want, and I can do whatever I want.”

Canelo Alvarez

Like it or not, Alvarez can do whatever he wants and fans shouldn’t be surprised when a fight with The Chosen One is announced for September. Berlanga has previously stated that Matchroom Boxing Chairman Eddie Hearn can make it happen.

In addition, a few months ago, the New Yorker was part of a deal that would have seen him fight Canelo on DAZN. This fight never came to fruition as the Mexican returned to Premier Boxing Champions.

Where there is smoke, there’s fire. Berlanga wouldn’t be talking like this if there wasn’t some form of conversation that had taken place. Equally important, the WBA has named him the mandatory challenger to Alvarez.

This was an extremely unpopular ruling within the boxing community as it can justify Canelo’s decision to fight Berlanga and avoid Benavidez in the process.
