WBC Gives Haney More Time To Decide!
Certain fighters get more privileges than others. That is certainly the case with reigning undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (30-0, 15 KOs), who is getting a bit of a reprieve from the WBC regarding his next fight.
The WBC handed out a July 21 deadline for the 24 year-old to inform them whether his next fight will be at 135 or 140lbs. Now, the WBC has now given Haney a six-day extension to decide. Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the WBC, announced the news on social media.
WHAT WILL THE CHAMPION DO?
Haney is coming off a unanimous decision victory over three-division champion Vasyl Lomachenko on May 20. After the win over Lomachenko, the lightweight champion strongly suggested that he intends to move up to junior welterweight.
*Word on the street is that the undisputed champion is in negotiations for a fight this fall against the current WBC junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis. Should Haney decide to stay at 135lbs, he would have to face mandatory challenger and two-division champion Shakur Stevenson. Team Stevenson wants their shot at the title and has been in contact with the WBC to force Haney’s hand.
As of this writing, there has been no official word from Haney about what his next move will be. Currently a free agent, he is a fighter with plenty of options. His decision will have a domino effect in both the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions.
