Canelo Alvarez Claims Loss to Bivol Provided Extra Motivation for Golovkin Fight

It’s been over a month since undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-2, 39KOs) was upset by WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11KOs). Prior to the fight, Alvarez was a significant favorite. However, in the ring, Bivol proved simply too big and too skilled for the Mexican superstar.

While vowing revenge, Canelo ultimately declined to invoke his rematch clause to face Bivol immediately. He instead turned his attention to his bitter rival, WBA and IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37KOs). These two have fought twice previously; once in September of 2017, which ended in a controversial draw and again in September of 2018 in which Alvarez walked away with the majority decision win.

MORE DANGEROUS NOW THAN BEFORE!

Alvarez and Golovkin are are officially set to rekindle their bitter rivalry on September 17. Speaking to reporters, Alvarez was asked if he was a more dangerous fighter now since the loss to Bivol. He had the following to say:

“I’m more dangerous now than before. So I’m very motivated and ready for this fight.”

Obviously, Alvarez doesn’t need much more motivation. Enough stems from his one-sided loss to Bivol that saw him knocked from the pound for pound number one slot. That, along with his genuine disdain for Golovkin, will have him looking to emphatically close their tension-filled rivalry once and for all. He also wants to show the world why he should still be viewed as the sports number one fighter!
