Haymon To Pay Canelo’s Huge Guarantee For Munguia Fight Only
Premier Boxing Champion Al Haymon is willing to pay undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) to face one-time WBO champion Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34KO). Canelo must agree to the fight in order to receive his high-price guarantee.
The boxing community is still waiting to see who Canelo will face for the traditional May 4 showdown. Several boxing enthusiasts believed WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo was the opponent, after Alvarez told Box Azteca he was fighting an American next.
CHANGE OF PLANS
It now seems Haymon has a change of plans as ESPN reports that he is only willing to pay the high price guarantee, providing Alvarez fights Munguia. If the undisputed champion insists on facing Charlo, he must agree to take a huge pay cut.
When looking at this from a financial standpoint, it only makes sense for Haymon to go in this direction. The boxing public has been extremely vocal about not wanting to see Canelo versus Charlo, especially after witnessing brother Jermell Charlo’s horrible performance.
Munguia has gained the backing of the Mexican fanbase and has emerged as the people’s choice following his stoppage over John Ryder. In addition, fans who are pushing for Canelo to fight two-time WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez will probably accept the fight as a consolation prize.
TAKE THE FIGHT AND COLLECT THE MONEY
With Haymon signing a new contract to host PBC fights on Amazon Prime, it makes sense he would want to put on a blockbuster pay-per-view for the first broadcast.
In this author’s opinion, Canelo should accept these terms and fight his fellow countryman. Like it or not, Munguia would perform better than Charlo. In addition, Alvarez is a much better fighter and would win easily, so there is no real danger.
Lastly, no other platform can afford his over $30 million guaranteed demand. The undisputed champion is smart and fully understands how the business of the sport operates. With the ball in his court, Canelo needs to take this free pass and accept Haymon’s offer.
