Is Canelo Closing in on a Two-Fight Deal?
According to ESPN, undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KO’s) is closing in on a two-fight deal. If everything comes to fruition, Alvarez will first take on WBA Super light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11 KO’s) on May 7. Following that, he would stage a trilogy fight versus IBF middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO’s) on September 17. The back-to-back fight sequence would also be a part of a two-fight deal that would bring Alvarez officially back into the fold with DAZN.
In his last at bat, Canelo matched wits with Caleb Plant who he beat by way of eleventh round knockout to become the first undisputed super middleweight champion in history. Following that prizefight, it was widely believed that the Mexican superstar would then take on WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu. Yet, public backlash at the notion of this would-be dust up got Team Alvarez to rethinking matters in hurry! If we get the bouts that are now being teased, this is a great improvement!
A SLICK DOUBLE-DATE!
Bivol was last in the ring on December 11, 2021 against Umar Salamov. He defeated Salamov by way of unanimous decision. His upcoming duel with Canelo will represent the redhead’s second bout at 175. In his first attempt at the weight class, Canelo would go on to obliterate Sergey Kovalev via eleventh round knockout. Although, beating a much younger, fresher Bivol would be a far more impressive win.
Provided he overcomes Bivol, Alvarez would be able to conclude his very bitter rivalry with GGG with a punctuating trilogy. But before we get too worked up about these potential fights, let’s wait and see if we can get some official announcements and not just industry rumblings!
