Canelo vs O’Sullivan Next? “Wishful thinking”

Not So Fast there Spike

By now everybody has read the reports on Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan possibly being Canelo Alvarez’ next opponent. It’s been a somewhat hot topic during times the talk wasn’t about Alvarez and his failed drug tests.

The news was first reported a couple of days ago by World Boxing News following an interview with O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan said that as long as he wins his fight on May 4th in Las Vegas then he will fight Alvarez next in September regardless of the outcome in the Alvarez/Gennady Golovkin rematch on May 5th.

According to Golden Boy President Eric Gomez there is no opponent set for Alvarez to face in September and no talk about a potential fight with O’Sullivan. Gomez told Ring Magazine the following when asked about the situation.

“Wishful thinking,” Gomez said. “We will consider anyone at 160 pounds (for Canelo after his May 5 rematch versus Gennady Golovkin).”

When 3KingsBoxing.com reached out to Golden Boy we were told; “There is no plans in place for Canelo’s next fight.”

Honestly, it would be hard to be too critical, after back to back fights with Golovkin, of Alvarez for taking what most consider a “stay busy” fight in O’Sullivan if, and this is a BIG if, he fought more than just twice a year.

It would be a bit presumptuous to assume what Team Alvarez next move may be without first knowing the outcome of the rematch with Golovkin. To be fair let’s just wait and see.
