Caroline Dubois Wants to Welcome Mikaela Mayer to Lightweight!

In 2022, British lightweight Caroline Dubois (5-0, 4 KOs) established herself as a fighter with a bright future. She wants to take her career to the next level and fight the best around her division in 2023. Given her choice, that opposition would take the form of ex-unified 130-pound champion Mikaela Mayer (17-1, 5 KOs)

HUNTING FOR THE BIG FISH

Dubois is coming off a first-round TKO over Sofia Rodriguez on December 17. Afterward, she sat down for an interview with the media outlet Sporting Icons. Dubois said she’s ready for world-level and has Mayer in her sights.

“I’m so blessed that I’m in a division that’s so stacked. But there’s some names, you know, Mikaela Mayer. She’s talking about moving up, if she can’t get a rematch with Alycia (Baumgardner), and I think that’ll be a great fight.

She’s American, famous over there, and British people love her. She brings that energy, and the best thing I like about it is that she wants to fight the best. I would love to jump in the ring with her and match our skills and see who is the better, and I know I will be.”

IS IT TOO MUCH, TOO SOON?

There’s no doubt that Dubois is a rising star in women’s boxing. Only 21, the southpaw from London, England has displayed a load of skill and punching power.

The question becomes: is Dubois biting off more than she can chew? Mayer has an educated left hand, versatility, and the kind of experience that Dubois has yet to endure in the ring as a pro. Many observers feel that Dubois is still in need of some seasoning. But Dubois has advanced skills for someone with her limited time in the paid ranks. She could combat that disadvantage in experience with sheer physical ability and power.

HOW VIABLE IS MAYER – DUBOIS?

Mayer has been inactive since a heartbreaking split decision defeat to reigning unified junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner in October 2022. She badly wants a rematch with Baumgardner, but it will not happen anytime soon, if ever. So in all likelihood, Mayer’s future will be at lightweight.

Dubois’s promoter, BOXXER, has her on the fast track. A fight between her and Mayer would draw great interest in England. BOXXER was the promoter of record for Mayer’s fight with Baumgardner.

A potential Mayer – Dubois fight should not be laughed off. BOXXER knows a potential big-money contest when they see it. They are keen on Mayer’s popularity in England and Dubois’s potential to be Great Britain’s next big female fighting star.

It’s not outside the realm of possibility that the promotional company has that matchup in their plans for the latter half of 2023. What may seem like an unreality now, could be something tangible sooner than folks think.
