Prograis Believes Teofimo Lopez Sr Needs to Go as Son’s Head Trainer
In the aftermath of displaying self-doubt, former lightweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez’s (18-1, 13KO) mental state came under attack. He tried to put a spin on things by making it seem as if it was a joke toward the fans. Two-time junior welterweight champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (28-1, 24KO) believes it is time for a trainer change.
Typically in boxing, whenever there is a need to change the team, it starts with the trainer. The former lightweight champion has been trained by his father, Teofimo Lopez Sr, his entire life. The reason behind some calling for his father to be replaced is due to another poor performance in the junior welterweight battle with Sandor Martin.
In the build-up to his unification with Vasyl Lomachenko, The Takeover cried while admitting at times his father’s intensity can be overwhelming. Furthermore, he openly admitted to wishing his father was more of a father than acting like a coach.
REGIS PROGRAIS EXPLAINS WHY LOPEZ NEEDS TO CHANGE TRAINERS
During an interview with Fighthype, Rougarou was very candid about why Lopez Sr may need to go.
“Listen, his daddy is living through him . . . his son is a potential superstar, so it’s normal that the dad wants to get in on that.”
“That can be harmful sometimes . . . yeah, I just think you need to change it. If your daddy living through you, you can’t do that . . . I feel like he needs to get rid of his dad. His dad, for me, is fucking him up.”
The two-time champion admitted that getting rid of his father will be hard for Lopez because it is family. However, he is correct. As hard as it will be, many inside the boxing community agree that perhaps Lopez Sr needs to take a lesser role.
