Tim Tszyu vs Brian Mendoza WBO Title Fight on October 15
Unbeaten Tim Tszyu (23-0, 17 KOs) will make the first defense of the WBO junior middleweight title against Brian Mendoza (22-2, 16 KOs). According to Tszyu’s promoter, No Limit Boxing, the bout will take place on October 15 in Tszyu’s home country of Australia.
Tszyu’s last outing was a first-round destruction of Carlos Campo in June 2023. Technically, Tszyu is the WBO Interim champion at 154. On August 3, the WBO announced they would strip reigning undisputed champion Jermell Charlo of the WBO title once he enters the ring for his upcoming September 30 contest against Jermell Charlo, and Tzsyu will be elevated to full-time champion.
Mendoza is the WBC Interim junior middleweight champion. He captured that title with a shocking seventh-round stoppage over Sebastian Fundora in April 2023.
LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CHALLENGE
At a press conference for Tszyu vs Mendoza, both fighters expressed excitement at fighting one another. Tszyu said he anticipates a tough battle.
“Me and Mendoza are the two next pit bulls in the division. I got the WBO, he’s got the WBC. We’re both coming off two big, big wins. We’re both on that incline. There’s no decline from either side. So, it’s a tremendous challenge, and I look forward to taking it with both hands.”
Both men carry power in both hands and like to take the fight to their opponents. It shapes up to be an exciting, action-packed contest.
This bout came to be in relative secrecy. It was simply a case of both camps reaching out to each other and striking a deal. There has been no venue set for this upcoming fight. But look for it to air on Showtime, which has televised Tszyu’s previous three bouts.
