Cesar Tapia Gets a Draw with Endry Saavedra on the Cards
In a very lively fight, middleweight Endry “El Chino” Saavedra (16-1-1, KO’s) fought Cesar “El Tijuanero” Tapia (17-0-1, 10 KO’s) to a majority draw.
Right from the outset the two men tore right into one another with heavy power shots to the head and body. Not that they were reckless, but there was no semblance of a feel-out round. Over the first two periods, the action was evenly contested, mainly on the inside with an emphasis on hooks.
The drama greatly increased when Saavedra dropped Tapia twice in the third, first with a right hook to the head then later a right hook to the body. Tapia narrowly escaped the round. To his credit, El Tijuanero had a good stabilizing round in the fourth, then dropped Saavedra with a clubbing right hook of his own in the fifth. For the better part of it, the duel evened out in the sixth and seventh periods. Unsurprisingly, a sweltering body attack forced Tapia in the corner and off balance, drawing another standing eight count in the ninth.
Despite the grueling nature of the fight, when placed in the hands of the judges the match was deemed a majority draw with the scores of 94-92 (Tapia) and 93-93 (twice).
