Jermell Charlo hopes to ice Brian Castaño in their battle for undisputed
When attempting to grasp a lofty goal its natural to be nervous or on edge, yet this is not the case for WBA Super, IBF and WBC World super welterweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (34-1, 18 KO’s). On July 17, he will take on WBO World welterweight champion Brian “El Boxi” Castaño (17-0-1, 12 KO’s) to determine the undisputed champion of the division. Despite the potential career-high win and historical ramifications, Charlo is dealing with the situation in a rather carefree manner.
“That’s funny, I don’t have no pressure on me, I been here so many times in my life! You know I have been boxing since I was eight years old, if I had pressure I wouldn’t be in this moment. Like, this moment is a dream come true moment, so why would I want to be under pressure? The state of Texas done seen me fight a lot of times, they watch me on TV, the millions around the world, and I am excited to be in the ring. The pressure is on him! And it will show.”
BUILT FOR THIS
Since suffering his sole loss to Tony Harrison back on June 22, 2018, Charlo has enjoyed a three-fight win streak. One of those three victories was a satisfying eleventh round stoppage of the aforementioned Tony Harrison. Riding this wave of success has filled the already self-assured fighter with even more zeal and grit. Let Iron Man tell it, Castaño is in for a world of pain come fight night.
“Just know I am much stronger than I was, I am much faster, I feel. I feel like I am ready. It’s not just about the power. I got power in both hands, power in every punch, power in every shot from different angles. I’m excited! I am excited to see what I can do, I am excited to be in this moment. I’m thankful for this opportunity to be facing another champion. You know this is not just another opponent. This is a champion, so I’m thankful. I know he got a game plan and we’ll figure out what to do on Saturday to him.”
Heading into the bout, there is no question that Jermell Charlo is the overwhelming favorite. Yet, it would be a foolhardy move to overlook El Boxi. Many in the boxing public thought that this brother Jermall Charlo would rip up Juan Montiel like high pressure water through cheap toilet paper. Despite this common belief, once in the ring, Charlo found himself being pushed to his limits to earn victory. If Iron Man is not careful, he could repeat that potentially perilous situation. Luckily for all of us, fight night is close at hand and these answers are not far away!
