Jermall Charlo vs Jaime Munguia Could Be In Play For Fall 2023
Presently, it looks like WBC middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (32-0, 22 KO’s) has set his sights on his next opponent. This is due to the frequent communications that he’s had lately with one-time WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33 KO’s). Not only have the two fighters exchanged productive words, Charlo was seen politicking with Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, who pushed Munguia at the Davis vs Garcia fight. Munguia recently took to social media asking De La Hoya to make the fight.
While he has yet to compete in 2023, Munguia, ranked #2 (WBC) and #3 (WBO), is the far busier fighter. He fought three times in 2022. The popular Mexican fighter won each contest, versus D’Mitrius Ballard, Jimmy Kelly and Gonzalo Coria, by way of knockout.
Conversely, Charlo has remained out of competition for the past two years. Ironically though, the knock on both boxers is that they each need to drastically step up their level of competition. Munguia has yet to face anyone that the boxing public would label as truly dangerous or definitively elite.
SLIDING INTO HOME?
No matter how you slice it though, Charlo versus Munguia is a solid duel for both pugilists. For Munguia, Hit Man would stand head and shoulders above his previous opposition. And obviously, this would place the Mexican in position to snag another world title. As for Charlo, given the length of time that he’s been inactive, Munguia is a very respectable live dog to get his feet wet with again.
Traditionally, PBC and Golden Boy Promotions have not always worked the best together or even seen eye-to-eye. Yet, given how enthusiastic the fighters are, there just may be a good chance that this one comes together minus too much backroom politics. Luckily no matter who the implied negotiations proceed and turnout, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news!
