Oscar De La Hoya Calls Out the WBC Over Inactivity By Jermall Charlo

Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya is shaking things up on social media. He believes the WBC is protecting middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (32-0, 22KO) from his fighter, Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33KO).

THE BACKSTORY

Charlo and Munguia’s paths were supposed to have crossed in 2022. Fans were excited to hear talks had been ongoing between the teams, only to receive a gut punch when negotiations fell apart. According to De La Hoya, the deal-breaker was due to Premier Boxing Champions holding control of the US Broadcasting rights.

Munguia continued to call out the WBC champion even after talks had come to halt. In June 2022, the former champion called out Charlo after running over Jimmy Kelly.

Charlo was supposed to fight journeyman Maciej Sulecki in 2022, but he pulled out after suffering a back injury that left him MIA for the rest of the year. During an interview on Punsh Drunk Boxing, WBC junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis, a close friend to Charlo, revealed the champ is still not ready to return due to dealing with personal issues.

DE LA HOYA CALLS OUT THE WBC

Noticing that Charlo has not been in the ring since June 2021, De La Hoya took to social media with a question that kicked off a heated discussion.

Whether or not De La Hoya is merely posturing, he raises a valid point. Typically, the organization would place said champion in recess with the right to immediately challenge for the title upon returning to the ring. Next, they would order the two top contenders to fight for the vacant title.

With that being said, let’s hope De La Hoya to keep that same energy when Charlo does return and makes the Munguia fight happen.
