Chris Eubank Sr Believes Conor Benn Was Betrayed by his Team
Chris Eubank Sr was heavily opposed to his son Chris Eubank Jr (32-2, 23KO) fighting family rival Conor Benn (21-0, 14KO). Now that the fight with Conor Benn is in jeopardy, it’s easy to imagine Eubank Sr basking in vindication. Surprisingly, he is not blaming Benn for the failed test of a banned substance. Instead, he opted to publicly praise the welterweight contender.
British boxing fans were on pins and needles, praying the fight between the two young contenders would continue. However, Benn’s positive test would ultimately see the Eubank Jr rivalry fight put off, for now.
EUBANK SR BELIEVES CONOR BENN WOULD BE CLUELESS IN WHAT TO TAKE
In hindsight, some inside the boxing community believe that perhaps the elder Eubank knew something was off with Benn. While speaking with The Fight Is Right, Eubank Sr showed forgiveness by giving Benn the benefit of the doubt.
“When I look at a fighter, I look at the spirit in the man. Conor would have had no idea, in my view, of what they would suggest he should have. I’ve seen them do it. I’ve watched them. These are men who are going to be rooted out of this game.
They are not fighters, they’re PE teachers. I respect them but not when they are harming fighters because in my view, when I look at Conor Benn, that’s a pure young man.”
As the interview continued, Eubank Sr shared a conversation he claims to have had with former rival Nigel Benn while throwing shame at boxing promoters.
“I told Nigel, ‘don’t come to these speaking engagements. It’s going to be too much pressure on you because you let them lead your son into a pit, a snare […] he’s a clean man and a great fighter’. But you have toddlers looking after us fighters. Toddlers – these guys they call managers and promoters.”
