Commey vs Chaniev for IBF Lightweight Title
Earlier this month,3KingsBoxing reported that Mikey Garcia vacated the IBF Lightweight title in order to challenge IBF Welterweight champion Errol Spence (scheduled for March 16, 2019). We have now learned who will fight for the newly vacant Lightweight title.
Richard Commey (27-2, 24KO) will battle IBF no. 3 ranked contender Isa Chaniev (13-1, 6KO) for the vacant belt on the Eleider Alvarez – Sergey Kovalev undercard. The bout will be televised on ESPN Feb. 2, 2019 at the Ford Center in Frisco, Texas.
This will be the second world title opportunity for Commey. In his previous world title shot, he lost to Robert Easter Jr. by split decision. The hotly contested bout took place in September 2016. On the other hand, Chaniev is on a three-fight winning streak including a unanimous decision win over former world title challenger Ismael Barroso in his previous bout.
