Michael Conlan Returns March 17
Rising featherweight contender Michael Conlan (13-0, 7ko) will be returning to the ring on St. Patrick’s Day at the Famous Madison Square Garden Arena. Since turning pro after that 2016 Olympic robbery, the Irish boxer has been on a serious tear in the professional ranks.
Conlan even was able to end 2019 on the highest of high notes, getting revenge against his Olympic rival Vladimir Nikitin. Everything appears to be going right for Conlan and he’s building serious momentum behind him. Now, it seems all that is left is a championship title match. However, this is where Top Rank will have to make a calculated decision.
The 28-year-old former Olympian is currently ranked inside the top ten by three of the governing sanctioning bodies. However, he is rated #1 by the WBO. This places him in direct view of a potential clash with 2016 Olympic silver medalist and WBO champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (13-0, 7ko). Stevenson has been killing it since turning pro and a future showdown was always being eyed by the boxing community between these two young lions.
Furthermore, the WBO #1 contender is fully aware of the fact that there has been a comparison between himself and fellow stablemate Stevenson. It’s going to be interesting to see when the top brass at Top Rank will look to have their two top prize Bulls lock horns.
For now, Conlan must first take care of business against Belmar Preciado. The bout will broadcast live on ESPN, March 17.
