Joe Cordina Could Meet Abdullah Mason or Sam Noakes Next!

To break a 24-month spell out of the ring, lightweight fighter Joe Cordina (18-1, 9 KO’s) defeated Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz by unanimous decision. Cordina generally had his way with Quiroz while he knocked rust off over the ten rounds. With the win, Cordina picked up the vacant WBO global lightweight title. Next up could be a battle with Abdullah Mason or Sam Noakes.

Now armed with the secondary title, Team Cordina will be looking to advance quickly in the division. In fact, his promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, was laser specific about what he wants for his victorious charge.

“Now he gets to work with [trainer] Gary [Lockett] again and get out around October time in a bigger fight. He’s got this now [the WBO global title], top 15 in the world. We want to try to get him in a position to fight the winner of Abullah Mason against Sam Noakes. That’s the aim – to try to become a two-division, three-time world champion!”

THE NEXT EPISODE

Presently, Abdullah Mason (19-0, 17 KO’s) has an unofficial fight lined up with UK import Sam Noakes (17-0, 15 KO’s). Mason is ranked #2 (WBO), #4 (WBC) and #13 (IBF), while Noakes holds the standings of #1 (WBO), #3 (WBC) and #6 (IBF). Provided that this bout does in fact take place, Mason will be the betting favorite going in.

It will be interesting to see who Cordina can pen a fight with in the meantime. Edwin De Los Santos, #14 (WBO) and Albert Bell, #10 (WBO), both stand as viable options. Each of these fighters have very established names in the American market and both are in need of opposition. De Los Santos was recently shortchanged a fight dealing with the unprofessionalism of Keyshawn Davis. Bell has an open fight date this August 30 with no defined foe. Perhaps Cordina can step in for the quick turn around.
