Terence Crawford Gives Teofimo Lopez Homework to Earn a Fight

Over the past several months, WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (21-1, 13 KO’s) has made quite a bit of noise calling out WBA super welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KO’s). In response, Bud has toggled between ignoring him, smearing his resume and earning power via social media, and offering to batter him in a street fight at the Canelo versus Berlanga fight. With this being said, Crawford just tossed Lopez a new Hail Mary shot to get the showdown he so craves.

POTS AND KETTLES BATTLING

No doubt, there are many who will cry foul. Technically speaking, Lopez is only mirroring the same potential leap that Bud is. Both are new residents in their current division and each are hunting for sharks that require an additional two-division leap. The Takeover will also point to his two divisional title runs and the multiple belts that he has collected along the way.

A scrap between Bud and The Takeover even has a built-in storyline of Crawford doubling back to Top Rank and potentially dismantling one of their premium products. Or, perhaps Lopez could champion the company and take the torch by pulling off an unexpected upset. In fact, a win of that magnitude certainly could take center stage of the boxing world.

WHAT ELSE YOU DOING?

A fight between Lopez and Crawford does have the potential to be a good seller. Especially after mixing these two eclectic camps in what is likely to be a very wild, vulgar and unpredictable pre-fight build up. Each should get a good pay-day out of the deal and both would be able to add a standout scalp to their collection.

On the flipside, a loss for Crawford would directly arm his detractors with a belt of silver bullets and bleed out any realistic possibility of facing Canelo. A loss for Lopez could just be a humbling lesson provided he holds his own and makes a great account of himself. If he got thoroughly dismantled or knocked out, then The Takeover will no doubt be shamed and labeled damaged goods until proven otherwise.

Yet, this fight doesn’t sound like it’s happening next, if ever. So, for the time being, we’ll all just have to keep our ears to the ground to see who both of these fighters mix it up next with.
