Franchon Crews-Dezurn defeats Maricela Cornejo again!

Tonight at the Digital Health Sports Park Franchon Crews-Dezurn overpowered and outworked Maricela Cornejo for a second time to retain the WBC Super-Middleweight title by unanimous decision (98-92 twice, 97-93).

With the win Crews-Dezurn also captured the vacant WBO Super-Middleweight belt.

Crews was originally scheduled to face mandatory contender Alejandra Santiago. However, Santiago had to withdraw due to the inability to get down to the 168-pound weight limit.

Due to the withdrawal, Cornejo (who previously lost a majority decision to Crews-Dezurn in September 2018) stepped on two days notice and the bout was salvaged.

The champion (6-1, 2 KO’s) is physically one of the strongest ladies in all of women’s boxing. She loves to walk fighters down behind power jabs and land with power right hands and hooks.

During the first few rounds the champ set the tone by doing what she does marching forward behind the jab forcing Cornejo back.

The tone Crews set during the early round went was how the fight went throughout. It wasn’t that Cornejo (13-4, 5 KO’s) wasn’t willing and didn’t fight hard. Ultimately for the challenger she just didn’t have enough tools in her shed to combat what Crew-Dezurn brought to the table.

As far as what’s in the future for the champion is unknown, but for any future opponents in the Super-Middleweight division she’s gonna be an extremely tough woman to handle.

Because of her physical strength, her ramrod and sheer will, if you can’t hurt and/or force her to fight backwards, she will be difficult to beat.

Furthermore, given her backstory, her endearing personality (coupled with her flashy outfits) along with the backing of DAZN, Crew-Dezurn has the potential to be one of the big names in women’s boxing.
