The David Benavidez Problem: Plan ‘B’

Benavidez still has an opportunity to dispute his positive test

Shockwaves soared across social media as the positive test for benzoylecgonine of WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez went viral!

However, many journalists and fans have dismissed the champion without mentioning his option of requesting a ‘B’ sample for retesting.

VADA President, Dr. Margaret Goodman has mentioned in a letter sent to his camp that he can indeed request a ‘B’ sample at his own expense.

Although it is not very often the ‘B’ sample comes back negative after a positive ‘A’ sample, it is still an opportunity for Benavidez to question the integrity of the initial test.

Not only can the champion request another test, but he can now witness the testing. Hypothetically speaking, if his ‘B’ sample returned negative, he would still have the problem of explaining the initial positive test.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman will set a hearing after Benavidez makes a decision to accept or deny further testing.

Also worth noting, Benavidez did not have an official bout scheduled when he tested positive. Random testing is a requirement by the WBC that its top 15 ranked contenders and champions must adhere to.

A deal with rumored opponent Anthony Dirrell had not been finalized. This is key because if suspended, he is not violating a contractual agreement with an opponent and his team.

Regardless, Benavidez has some explaining to do in order to keep the respect earned as a champion.
