David Benavidez Has All the Necessary Tools to Overcome Morrell
One of the highly-anticipated light heavyweight fights of early 2025 is the grudge match between two-time super middleweight champion David Benavidez “The Mexican Monster” (29-0, 24 KOs), and David Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs). It’s a fight where Benavidez will prove to be the superior fighter.
PLENTY OF BAD BLOOD
The combatants will battle on February 1, 2025, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Several heated verbal exchanges occurred during a press event and photoshoot to announce the upcoming contest. Afterward, Benavidez spoke exclusively with Fight Hub TV and didn’t mince words about what he has in store for his upcoming opponent.
“It was inevitable – him telling me that he was going to beat me, and then I told him I’m going to break his mouth and beat the shit out of him; Good old-fashioned trash talk.”
After spending 2023 and 2024 pursuing a fight with the reigning super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at 168, Benavidez moved up to the light heavyweight division. In June 2024, the Phoenix, Arizona native fought and beat the former WBC 175-pound champion, Oleksandr Gvozdyk. He faces Morrell, a fighter some in the boxing community felt he would avoid. However, Benavidez said that he’s looking forward to silencing his critics.
“He’s an accomplished fighter. Taking a test that nobody else wanted to take – taking the challenge that no one wanted to take, just proving all the people wrong; all the people that think he’s going to beat me. Proving all of them wrong and solidifying myself as the most dangerous fighter in my weight class today.”
WHY HE WINS
Morrell is a talented Cuban southpaw with excellent boxing skills, movement, and punching power. However, he’s never been truly tested as a pro. Benavidez is a big, powerful man. He knows how to use angles to cut off the ring and is a better inside fighter than Morrell.
The underrated qualities of The Mexican Monster are his patience and hand speed. Morrell is noted for his fast hands. However, a strong argument can be made that Benavidez is a faster combination puncher. It will come as a surprise that Morrell will not have a decided advantage in speed.
If Morrell cannot find a way to hurt or keep Benavidez at bay, he will not hold up over the long haul and will get dominated during the second half of the fight. The experience, physical pressure, and determination of Benavidez will prove to be the difference in what should be a highly competitive battle.
