David Benavidez Collects Win At 175 Over Oleksandr Gvozdyk
In his debut bout at light heavyweight, two-time super middleweight champion David “The Monster” Benavidez (29-0, 24 KO’s) steamrolled Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KO’s) in a unanimous decision victory. With the win, Benavidez became the interim WBC light heavyweight champion.
Right from the opening round, The Monster put his fast hands and sweltering pressure style on full display. As was the common belief going into his match up, the Ukrainian pugilist was a willing opponent but certainly could not keep up with the volume and diversity of attack that Benavidez provided. As he is prone to do, The Monster heavily targeted Gvozdyk’s body while doing a great job of defending himself from incoming fire.
To his credit, The Nail stood up to the wilting assault that Benavidez relentlessly poured onto him. In an apparent change of tactics, The Monster took a significant portion of the eighth round off, but picked up the pace toward the end of the period. In fact, Benavidez slowed notably in the final few rounds of the fight. This however, did not prevent him from still dominating in convincing fashion. Instead, it simply gave the impression that along with having a very durable and tough adversary in front of him, Benavidez is still acclimating to the new division. Nevertheless, when the scorecards were unveiled, Benavidez won by way of unanimous decision with the final tally reading 116-112, 117-111 and 119-109.
