Yankiel Rivera Pockets Unanimous Decision Over Victor Sandoval
In front of his home area fans at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruze Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico, Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivero (6-0, 2 KOs) put on a boxing clinic en route to a unanimous decision victory over Victor Sandoval (37-4, 23 KOs).
Midway through the second round, Rivera was given credit with a knockdown as a left hand appeared to cause Sandoval’s glove to touch the canvas. But upon replay, Sandoval tripped over Rivera’s feet.
Sandoval had nothing to offset Rivera’s speed and boxing skills. The Puerto Rican was pot-shotting with fast combinations to the head. When Sandoval tried to apply pressure, El Doctorcito used his legs to move out of harm’s way.
If there was one criticism of Rivera, you wish he would’ve stood in the pocket more and thrown more power shots. That aside, he was in complete control. Currently ranked third by the WBA at flyweight, next for El Doctorcito could be a fight matchup against former IBF 112-pound champion Sunny Edwards.
