Keyshawn Davis Pursuing An Interim Title to Face Teofimo Lopez

Ever since the two shared the stage at a presser for their last matches, lightweight contender Keyshawn “The Businessman” Davis (10-0, 7 KO’s) has pursued a duel with WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (20-1, 13 KO’s). Now, it appears he’s moving tangibly closer. In a brief Q&A with AB Boxing News, Davis gave what he thought was a positive update and what might lead to a showdown with interim WBA 140-pound champion Ismael Barroso (25-4-2, 23 KO’s).

“I’m going to be straightforward; what that man told me was get an interim at 140 and we can make the fight happen this year! It’s on camera, so we will see if Teo live up to his words!”

A NEW ROAD TO HAVOC?

In his last tour of duty, versus Jamaine Ortiz, Lopez certainly did not turn in a stellar performance. As a result, boxing’s criticism sharks have been circling the water heavy, pondering on where Lopez’s head is at. Among those critics swims Davis, craving for his shot at the title and glory. However, one of the biggest initial issues that Davis (#3 WBC, #4 IBF, #5 WBO) will have to navigate is the fact that he is ranked one division below Lopez at lightweight.

Assuming that The Businessman is able to contract meaningful fights at junior welterweight without this being too great a hurdle, the only interim champion in the division is Barroso. The rough-knuckled bruiser rose to notoriety after seemingly being swindled out of a win over Rolando Romero. In his very next bout, the wizened-faced Venezuelan pulverized and stopped UK import Ohara Davies in the first round.

The Businessman’s name would be a sensational addition to Barroso’s record, if he could pull it out. On the flipside, Davis collects a fresh scalp and the requisite interim title he needs. Yet, it remains to be seen if Team Barroso is even willing to consider the fight, or ever get presented with it.

Provided that the Venezuelan does want the smoke, this should make for a fun battle between the unlikely powerful veteran versus a hyper-talented professional freshman. In either case, we will be sure to keep an eye on the bigger simmering feud between Keyshawn Davis and Teofimo Lopez.
