Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz are in negotiations!
Over the past few months, there has been increasing talk about a potential prizefight between WBA world lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (23-0, 22 KO’s) and WBA super world super featherweight champion Leo Santa “El Terremoto” Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KO’s).
In all actuality, this would make for one wonderful scrap. However, fight fans have more than a little bit of justification in being suspicious in thinking it will never happen.
REAL TALK OR CRYING WOLF…AGAIN?
The two have fought in neighboring divisions for years with no substantial indication that they would ever meet on the canvas. To make matters even more doubtful, Tank has all but made a career of selling fruitless woof tickets to a plethora of his fellow fighters. However, things took a turn for the perceived best following Santa Cruz’s last bout.
In the aftermath of his scrap with Miguel Flores, El Terremoto stated with emphasis that he wanted to face Davis ASAP! Apparently he was tired of the fans saying that he was scared of the stiffest tests available, such as Davis and WBC world featherweight champion “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr (31-1, 18 KO’s), and he meant to do something about it.
Having deemed Davis to be the most destructive puncher in his current or neighboring weight class, Tank definitely fit the bill. Now it seems that Davis is returning the sentiments in a very public way.
SOCIAL MEDIA TRACTION
While there have been no official statements or moves made quite yet, Gervonta Davis did what he does best and took to his social media accounts. On both his Twitter and IG accounts, Tank posted a would-be fight poster hyping a potential prizefight between himself and Santa Cruz.
Many are taking this as an indication that the two are drawing closer to an actual fight. Some have begun thinking that there are on-going talks behind the scenes, while others suspect that Davis is simply running his mouth on social media yet again.
SOME GLARING HURDLES
If remaining positive, and assuming that there is something cooking behind the scenes, there are still quite a few questions that need to be answered. First and foremost, if these two did lock horns, what weight class would it be contested at?! Would Santa Cruz jump up another division and face Davis at a career high? Or would Tank drop back down to 130?
In either scenario, it’s a dubious proposition. This is due to Tank having notorious complications on the scale. Even in his very last outing, when moving up in weight, the Baltimore native just barely made weight after needing more time to trim off some additional girth.
On the flip side, there is never any way to tell how a fighter will look when they move up in weight. Even as things stand now, Santa Cruz is already at a significant power disadvantage, so who knows how he would fair competing an additional four pounds north.
Another huge item of interest is whether the bout would be on pay-per-view. Leonard Ellerbe, from The Money Team promotions, has screamed from every mountain top that Tank Davis is the next huge star in the sport. Along with this message, Ellerbe has insisted that Davis’s next fight would without a doubt be on ppv. But are the fans willing to pay for Davis v Cruz?
Yeah, there are a lot of questions to be answered with this one! But let’s just keep our fingers crossed and maybe, just maybe this fight will actually come into fruition. Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing to see what develops next!
