De La Hoya Wants To Match Zepeda With Berinchyk & Stevenson
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya will look to set up a fight between his lightweight fighter, William “Camaron” Zepeda (31-0, 27KO) and WBO champion Denys Berinchyk (19-0, 9KO). Then, possibly later down the line, a fight with WBC champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (22-0, 10KO).
On July 6, Camaron stepped into the ring against Giovanni Cabrera. With the opportunity to fight for a world title next, the Mexican went on a destructive body attack that ended the fight in the third round.
BRING ON THE CHAMPION
In the post-fight in-ring interview, Zepeda called for a fight with IBF champion Vasyl Lomachenko in Ukraine. He had the right location in mind but the wrong fighter, as De La Hoya admitted a battle with the WBO champion would be easier to make.
“He’s the number one contender in every organization. You have Shakur Stevenson. You have Lomachenko, who I believe is going to be fighting Tank Davis. So there is the WBO champion, which would be relatively easy to make . . . Hopefully, down the line rather sooner than later, go up against Shakur Stevenson.”
Stevenson is coming off a solid victory over Artem Harutyunyan in his last fight under the Top Rank Banner. After hearing Zepeda call out his name, Fearless expressed wanting to make that fight. Now a free agent, perhaps he will sign with Golden Boy for a shot at a high-profile unification.
De La Hoya is right to target the WBO champion first as he may be ripe for the picking. Berinchyk picked up the vacant title after defeating three-division champion Emanuel Navarrete on May 18. The Ukrainian is 36 years old and has never faced anyone with a high work-rate nor body attack like William Zepeda.
It’s an exciting time for the Team Zepeda, as a world title showdown is on the horizon.
