Derrick James Promises a Superior Spence in Crawford Rematch
Marching into the Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-1, 22 KO’s) versus Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s) prizefight, most saw it as a 50/50 battle. Once in the ring however, Crawford proved to be the vastly superior fighter on the night. Having had a number of weeks to lick their wounds and plot retaliation, Team Spence is ready to make their play for revenge. In particular, The Truth’s chief second, Derrick James, is acutely confident that his charge will make the proper adjustments to win a second encounter.
In a recent brief Q&A with AccordingToBoxing, James revealed his thoughts on the matter.
“He’s doing good, he’s okay, things happen, life happens. You never really know, everybody wants to win all the time. Some days are not your day and that wasn’t his day.”
“I know he’ll be [victorious in the rematch]. Different situation, different weight, just everything, so yeah . . . I think my guy is a better fighter altogether. Things just happen. Bad day, bad day.”
BLOODY LITMUS TEST
It will be interesting to see how Spence looks in the rematch, if it actually does come to pass. Thus far, The Truth has proven to be something of a juggernaut in the sport. As a competitor inside the ring, he’s a tank who walks down and saps his opposition’s energy with an intelligent but grueling body attack. Outside the ring, Spence has braved two automobile accidents, the first of which arguably should have been fatal, and a detached retina.
In all three of these scenarios, Spence has returned to the ring and shown himself to be the same high quality, bruising pugilist. So only time will tell if he can pull yet another rabbit out the hat and reemerge from his first professional loss as a much improved specimen. If The Truth does manage the feat, he will only serve to heighten the lore already surrounding his name. Even better, if Spence is victorious, then we’d no doubt march straight into one of this generation’s finest trilogies.
For the time being however, let’s wait and get an official fight announcement verifying that they will actually be squaring off again. Despite this being the sport of boxing, there are always quite a few curve balls thrown every day! Ideally, in the end, we will see if Derrick James’ high praise gets its day in court and if Spence can pass the Crawford acid test.
