Devin Haney Now Wants A Rematch With Ryan Garcia

When WBC junior welterweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s) initially lost to rival “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO’s), he wanted no parts of a rematch. However, now that Garcia has been suspended for one year, due to a PED violation, The Dream has had a change of heart. At this juncture, with his undefeated record restored, the two-division champion wants to run it back as soon as Ryan Garcia is eligible to compete again.

DOES SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE?!

In the eyes of many, the one year suspension will come across as little more than a slap on the wrist. This is largely due to the fact that we are living in an era where it is extremely common for fighters to only fight once a year, anyway.

For example, pound for pound fighter and two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford has only fought once a year for the past four years. Popular WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis just fought off a one year absence. Prior to his rematch with Tyson Fury, undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk had only fought once per year for the last several years.

Competing rather infrequently is not a new or uncommon phenomenon in the sport these days. Therefore, saddling Garcia with this suspension is not really an earthshattering repercussion.

LET’S DO IT AGAIN?!

Given this reality, Haney could be professing the truth when saying their immediate rematch could very easily be one of the biggest fights of the year. At the same time, just like The Dream initially said he would never face Garcia in the ring again, he may change his mind.

For example, at the current moment, Haney has to decide if he will face his mandatory challenger in Sandor Martin or vacate this title. Judging by the importance he has placed on his legacy and collecting the belts in the past, this change of opinion would not be surprising.

Afterall, as so many fans love to hate Haney, a reasonably quick turnout may be very beneficial to him. This would apply financially, professionally and probably mentally as well. There is no question that both his fans and haters will be sure to tune in to see how he looks in that return duel. Now, we will just have to wait and see if Haney is sincere about stepping away from this length of time or simply blowing hot air. Stay tuned to 3King Boxing for the thrilling conclusion!
