Devin Haney To Take a Hiatus While Ryan Garcia Is Suspended
WBC junior welterweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15KO) and popular fighter “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20KO) will be away from the sport for one year, but for different reasons.
The boxing community and its news cycle are buzzing as Fight Freaks Unite reported that King Ry has been suspended for one year. This decision was inevitable for Garcia, who tested positive for Ostarine against The Dream on April 20. In addition, his victory over Haney has been ruled a no-contest.
Before the decision came down from the New York State Athletic Commission, the Californian had announced his retirement from the sport. Despite being suspended, Garcia continues to maintain his innocence.
BOTH FIGHTERS WILL BE SIDELINED
An upset Garcia took to social media with a message for his arch-rival Haney and the boxing public.
Haney and his father, Bill Haney, have been calling for justice in light of his rival’s positive test. The elder Haney wasn’t surprised that Garcia decided to retire from the sport. Moreover, he issued a message to those trying to protect the popular fighter.
Previously, The Dream announced he was going to take some time off away from the sport. After hearing the news, Haney thanked the Commission for doing the right thing, before doubling down on leaving the sport for one year.
In this author’s opinion, The Dream can ill-afford to take time away from the sport. The attacks toward him will only intensify. Some fans believe that regardless of Garcia’s positive test results, Haney’s inability to avoid the left hook is the reason why he lost.
This is not a good look for the sport as one fighter is forced to sit out, and the other has volunteered to sit on the sidelines.
