Diaz vs Sanchez
In the co-main event for Maloney v Franco, featherweight Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz (26-2, 16 KO’s) scored a unanimous decision victory over Jason “El Alacrancito” Sanchez (15-2, 8 KO’s). Coming into the bout, Diaz was only one fight removed from a sour unanimous decision loss to WBO world featherweight champion “Fearless’ Shakur Stevenson (14-0, 8 KO’s).
It was also his third bout since dropping down to featherweight from the super featherweight division. Yet, in against Sanchez, Pitufo was calm, focused and effective. The fight initiated with a more or less feel-out round for both men. However, when the second period began, Diaz was able to clearly take control of the action with his jab.
After losing the momentum in the second round, Sanchez was never able to regain it again. To his credit, El Alacrancito remained tough and never stopped trying to win the contest. Unfortunately for him, he simply didn’t have the answers to solve the riddle of Diaz. Coached by the legendary Freddie Roach, the audience could almost see the confidence of Diaz grow with each advancing round.
Along with his sharp and steady jab, Diaz countered consistently and used his wheels effectively to circle and maintain his preferred punching range. In response, Sanchez could do little else other than chase and headhunt. By the tenth round, Sanchez was busted up, bleeding, and obviously disheartened.
Now that he is officially on a two-fight win streak, it will be interesting to see who Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz pens a bout with next.
