Dina Thorslund Captures Another World Title
WBO super bantamweight champion Dina Thorslund (16-0, 6ko) easily won the vacant WBO bantamweight championship by defeating Jasseth “Dinamita La Pleblita” Noriega (27-5-2, 5Ko). The fight took place in front of fans at the Struer Arena, in Denmark.
THE SUPERIOR BOXER
Thorslund fought in front of the hometown crowd and did so with renewed vigor at an incredible pace. It was a high octane fight from the moment the bell sounded. She was throwing beautiful combinations to the body, trying to slow down the former WBC minimumweight challenger.
As the fight would continue, the WBO champion started using her footwork and defensive skillset by creating space and landing counter hooks. This became very apparent in the fifth round when she put together a nice series of punches, landing the overhand right and knocking down Noriega. Although, the challenger was adamant she had slipped.
Thorslund’s superior boxing skill was too much for Noriega throughout the fight. When the final sounded, all three judges scored it a shutout with scorecards of 99-90 across the board! As a result, she became the first Danish fighter to have won a title in two different divisions.
THE NEXT STEP!
The newly crowned WBO bantamweight champion has been calling for a fight with WBA champion Shannon “The Baby Face Assassin” Courtenay (7-1, 3ko). Courtenay captured the vacant title by defeating Ebanie Bridges back on April 10. Thorslund has dropped down in weight just to make this fight happen. During an interview with MTK Global, she is quoted as saying a fight with Courtenay would be easy work!
“I’m not impressed by Courtaney at all! I will beat her very easy.”
However, it has been reported that shortly after the fight, Thorslund has shifted gears by calling out Denmark resident and IBF featherweight champion Sarah Mahfoud (10-0, 3ko). This callout makes sense considering talks of these ladies fighting have been circling within the hall of the boxing community since 2019. The IBF champion has not been in the ring since February 2020, although, she was elevated to full champion on July 16, 2020.
It seems that team Thorslund is viewing all the options on the table. The WBO has given the two-divisional champion ten days to decide which title she is going to keep. As per their rules, a fighter can not hold two belts in different weight divisions unless they are considered the “super” champion.
If the WBO makes Thorslund the super champion, it would allow her to keep both belts while trying to pursue fights with either Courtaney or Mahfoud. The organization has done the same thing for both two-divisional undisputed champions Katie “KT” Taylor and Claressa “T-rex” Shields.
