Dmitry Bivol Discusses Canelo Alvarez Game Plan!
On May 7, unbeaten WBA Super 175-pound champion Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11KOs) will defend his title against undisputed 168-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-1-2, 39KOs). There’s no secret that Bivol is a major underdog heading into this matchup. One could argue he’s only a major underdog due to the fact he’ll be facing a guy many consider to be the best pound for pound fighter in the sport. Alvarez also happens to be the face of boxing, regardless of where you rate him among the top ten best fighters in the sport.
Bivol, a tremendously skilled fighter, possesses all the attributes needed to be victorious against Alvarez, except one. That is the fighter’s mentality. In past fights, Bivol has been dominant, but his lack of aggression to get opponents inferior to him out of the way by way of knockout has made people question his killer instinct. However, heading into this big fight, he knows he’s going to have to change things up if he wants to walk away with the biggest win of his career.
He said the following during the Blair Cobbs vs Alexis Rocha telecast on DAZN:
“I just need to do my job, what I can do best. It’s a good jab, with good movements and sometimes pressure, sometimes movement. I believe it. Everything I can do, if I do it well, I can win. I believe it.”
From the comments of Bivol, he certainly sounds like he knows what he needs to do to be victorious. The question is, will he be able to flip the light switch and actually do it, or will he simply approach and fight this bout as he’s done in his last few ring outings? On May 7, we’ll get our answer.
