Previously, 3kignsboxing.com reported IBF super bantamweight champion TJ Doheny (20-0, 14 KOs) signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing. We also reported Doheny’s debut bout for Matchroom Boxing, and first IBF belt defense would be January 18 at MSG.

The undisclosed element during the time of his signing was his opponent. Well, we have learned he will make his first world title defense against Ryohei Takahashi (16-3-1, 6KOs).

Takashi, a 28 year-old from Japan, currently ranks 10th with the IBF. Largely unknown even among those who follow the Asian boxing scene, Takashi is an aggressive fighter who will occasionally switch from orthodox to southpaw.

While Takahashi is a fighter who likes to come forward, he is not the most technically skilled fighter in the world. In addition, his defense is a bit leaky.

He was Matchroom’s choice of opponent even during the announcement of the promotional deal with Doheny. So, why didn’t they say so at the time? Issues became apparent regarding the acquisition of a visa for Takashi at the time of the announcement.

Fortunately, over the past few days, the folks who guide his career at the Yokohama Hikari Gym made a dash to get a Visa for their fighter. Now that one has been granted, the fight is a go.
