Edgar Berlanga Snaps Knockout Drought & Calls Out Canelo!
In his first fight of the year, super middleweight contender Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-0, 17 KO’s) scored a knockout over Padraig “The Hammer” McCrory. Immediately following the victory, The Chosen One called out the undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO).
As the minutes ticked by and the action began heating a bit, it was clear that Berlanga was a bit frustrated. He didn’t start letting go of his hands until the fourth round and managed to hurt The Hammer on several occasions. After scoring a knockdown in the sixth round, the hard-punching New Yorker was awarded the victory when McCrory’s corner threw in the towel.
BRING ON THE UNDISPUTED CHAMPION NEXT
Berlanga, who hadn’t scored a knockout since fighting Ulises Sierra in 2020, quickly called for a showdown with the Mexican mega-star. Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that the fight was a WBO title eliminator. This prompted The Chosen to send a direct message to Canelo in the post-fight interview.
“We want Canelo next! Look at Eddie right there, he is going to make it happen!”
At the moment, Canelo has not announced an opponent for May 4. There is much speculation throughout the industry as to who he will face next. Given his remarkably anemic resume, one would not think that Berlanga would get the nod, but his marketability makes him an option.
With no disrespect intended, given Canelo’s diverse dance list of top-notch opposition, The Chosen One would be very green in comparison. Stranger things have happened in the sport of boxing, so all fans do is sit back and wait to see what is going to happen.
